Quando guardo una città penso in realtà ad altre città - come ciò che vedo in questa città è connesso con qualcos'altro che ho visto in una città completamente differente; o dei multipli strati di interfaccia storicamente formulati e visualmente manifestati che ho visto in questa specifica città e che il passato ha incapsulato all'interno della superficie dello spazio di un luogo particolare. Il nome che do a questo metodo e processo di guarda-e-vedi è "serpeggiare visivo". Lascio che il mio corpo cammini in giro per la città e il mio sguardo lungo la sua superficie per afferrare le caratteristiche di una particolare interfaccia urbana. Per me lo spazio urbano è un tipo di spazio mediatico in cui gli interessi e le storie si trovano in uno stato di costante interazione e rivalità. Lo spazio urbano è dinamico e gerarchico; è in debito verso il passato come verso il presente, verso il piano pubblico e l'uso privato; è pieno di tracce del passato e copioni per il futuro.... Alla fine della giornata, la sua interfaccia è ciò che li lega tutti insieme. Nei mie scatti fotografici provo, all'inizio, a catturare il più possibile di questo spazio, dei suoi angoli e strade. Poi provo a mettere insieme queste foto in una narrazione differente, augurandomi che riveli qualcosa della sostanza della specifica località.

When I look at cities I am actually thinking of either other cities - how what I see here in this city connects with something else I have seen in a completely different city; or of the multiple layers of historically formulated and visually manifested interface, which I see in this particular city and which the time past has encapsulated within the surface and space of a particular location. My own name for this method and process of look-and-see is "visual crawling". I let myself walk around a city and my gaze glide along its surface in order to grasp the characteristics of a particular urban interface. For me the urban space is a kind of a media space where interests and histories are in a state of constant interaction and rivalry. The urban space is dynamic and hierarchical; it is indebted to both the past and the present, to the public agenda and the private use; it is full of traces of the past and scripts for the future... At the end of the day, its interface is what binds it all together. In my photographs I try at first to capture as much of this space as possible and in as many angles/ways as possible. Then I try to make these photos come together in a different narrative, which hopefully reveals something of the substance of the specific locality.
